Approximately fifty cars have been covered with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they stated in a statement.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then located numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
An important official said the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
