“That was regrettable. It was essentially an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he noted. “The action was accidentally done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
Historical Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
